The Virtual Symposium Returns: Let’s Pick A Topic!

Our sixth virtual symposium Participants List For The Sixth Virtual Symposium Odd Then, Fantastic Now featured more participants than any other, thanks largely to folks promoting it on their blogs. Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who promoted it… and welcome to the double handful of newbies who joined us.

Ready for the seventh? Let’s pick one topic from those listed below, and on the morning of Sunday, April 26 I’ll provide a central landing page which will have links to all contributors’ offerings. No matter which topic we ultimately choose, I hope folks will interpret it as broadly as befits their personalities. Essays, fantasies, poems, image collages, other artwork – the wilder the interpretation, the better!

On the morning of Sunday, April 26, I’ll start a placeholder post, and as participants put their contributions up, I’ll look for their notifications and incorporate links into that central post. Participants are encouraged to note in their posts that they’re part of a communal effort: Doing so allows someone who stumbles on one such blog item to enjoy as many of our pieces as he/she wants… and further strengthens a sense of virtual community.

The only two rules are: A ) Please post as early on the chosen day as possible, to allow for maximum exposure (and, quite frankly, so I’m not glued to my desk all day), and B ) the posts should be entirely original, as opposed to commenting on other posts from the topic. Ideally, posts should be created beforehand, and put on the site on the designated day. (The comments sections, of course, would be fair game!)

A suggestion: Participants may want to refer to either the virtual symposium or the topic itself in their headline. Not a requirement – there are no requirements, save for originality and participation – but a suggestion which will let the wide blog community know what we’re doing.

And… this is not a contest. No souvenir mugs will be sent, nor ribbons or bling awarded. The idea here is for those interested to, on a single day, offer an interpretation of a single topic for the sheer fun of it.

By all means, encourage other bloggers to participate – and to let me know they’re doing so, either through this post or via email, so on April 26 I can link to their posts. Oh, and consider this permission – nay, encouragement – to the symposium and link back to this post! I’d like to make sure folks interested in participating have the opportunity to do so. , , – and remember, pimping is a great way to influence your topic of choice.

Electioneering is perfectly legal, here… so feel free to leave reactions, persuasive arguments, and snide asides (about topics, but NOT bloggers) in the comments section below.

So what topic will we use for the next virtual symposium? I’ve listed four – I think they’re general enough that, whichever one we end up choosing, most folks should be comfortable offering reactions. Feel free to electioneer in the comments, below, for any you find particularly compelling.

Voting for the topic will close at end-day on Monday, April 20.

that vote -- newbie participants are always welcome!

Thank you in advance for your participation! And yes, reading and enjoying counts as participation. Pick that topic!
Inspiration (what inspires us to)
Technology
Body image/imagery
Cartoon/cartooning/drawing/painting (interpret as you wish!)
Other (Write it in below and lobby for it. Longshot, but… why not?)

I'll be in Vegas that weekend, with enough time in between adventures in Sin City to pen a few snippets. In fact with such a neon backdrop, I am sure all the viable topic ideas would generate the flow in creatively penning the next entry for the symposium.

Looking forward to seeing where this goes; I'll "pimp" this out on my blog shortly.

We have a write! In! RascalQUALITY, would you vote for "other" just to let everyone know?

If nothing else, I'll add thse to my list of possibilities, so you should see 'em in future offerings...

And... regardless of what is ultimately chosen, I hope you'll participate. Very often, when people say they aren't inspired by, or are confused by, the choices, they end up contributing wonderful posts...

Feel free to electioneer for any of your selections! Get enough votes, and who knows... we could see a major upset!

Almost put "Food" in again as a topic -- it was a runner-up twice, and I wanted to give it a rest -- but again, if enough people indicate through the comments that they are voting for it, Food it will be?

What have YOU done today to get "Food: elected?

Aside, um, from that voting thing...

We have a quorum of two, and vote for inspiration. The Kalamazoo Committee has studied, investigated and now deliver our recommendation. The procedure itself is uninspiring, but that's how we get shit done around here. The decision was unanimous, un-amorous and unimaginative but amicable. We're saving ourselves for the essays. OK- she's saving herself. I can't stop talking.

Your bureaucratic democratic committee process is an inspiration to us all... unfortunately, it may inspire exactly the wrong behavior. I'll get back to the two of you when I figure out what that wrong behavior is.

But you must illuminate us... on those rare occasions where the two of you are deadlocked, what do you do for a tiebreaker? Throw it to the House of Commons? Give the dog a say?

Interesting, and very valid, reason for choosing what you did. I'd love to see some more visual (as opposed to verbal) contributions to the symposium, regardless of the topic, and thought this might be a way to get people thinking outside the template...

I like this idea, but if it wins I'm damned if I know what I'd do for it: I can barely draw a bath.

Hope you'll at least mull the topic, once it's selected... I love the challenge of stretching oneself, and find it alternately terrifying (when I've got nothing) and exhilarating (when I've got nothing and somehow manage to pull of a decent contribution myself).

Trust you'll at least read and enjoy, and hope you'll do more!

I only have one vote, but you already make it worth my while! All right, you can change your vote (literally -- you can move it from one to another choice right up until voting is closed) to changing life trajectories (a write-in) or anything else you want.

Get enough people to write in your desired topic here, and that's what it'll be...

I know it's a hot topic... it actually came in a close second in the last two rounds of voting. Figured I'd give it a rest this month and test out other topics... but you can be pretty confident that it'll be offered as a choice next month. I am nothing if not a slave to the populi...

I'm pessimistic about "inspiration" being in the lead right now. I'm wondering how many diverse and interesting posts we'll get out of that one that are as meaningful to the reader as they are to the writer.

I haven't voted yet. I just wanted to add to the discussion first. I hope people are considering what kind of blogs they'd like to read as well as what kind of blogs they'd like to write when they vote. The other topics are a little more interesting to me because I think they will force the writers to think a little more and come up with more diverse responses.

I haven't voted yet either, but for other reasons. Your statement: "I hope people are considering what kind of blogs they'd like to read as well as what kind of blogs they'd like to write when they vote" is a bit strange.

Every blogger has their individual style that attracts a category of readers. And, every blogger has their own readers base. Bloggers either write for their base of readers, or they do it for their own satisfaction. What you imply is that we need to work on reaching wider audience. This may be some blogger's goal, but not all of us concerned with numbers of watchers/readers. Yes, it's nice to have many people interested in what one has to say, but that isn't the primary goal.

I can't speak for everyone but to me blogging is some sort of self expression. I won't change the way I blog or subjects that I blog about for the sake of popularity.

As to what I like to read, I do have number of my favorite bloggers that I follow. I'm pretty confident that no matter the subject, they won't disappoint me.

If I'm reading glicecc correctly, he was offering the idea that one consideration voters might want to take into account is which topic offers the greatest amount of room for a wide variety of expressions and interpretations. (I could be off base about this, of course.)

Every blogger has his/her/their individual voices, and strong personalities as well. It's what makes the symposium fun. I doubt that there is anything anyone could say (or write) which would make them change their specific type of self expression...

Although your comment has given me what I think is a very good idea. Starting with the next symposium, I am going to add one more rule: All contributions must be written in Pig Latin.

Step 1. Design the "I Voted for the Virtual Symposium" bling.

Step 2. Post said bling for anyone to take.

Step 3. Add said bling to your own profile.

Step 4. Pull up said bling on your mobile phone. Increase the size by 400 percent. Wear your mobile phone in a handy pouch just off your lapel.

Step 5. Glory in the envy and admiration of everyone you meet.

I voted inspiration. I didn't make it on the last symposium, I'm hoping I could make the deadline this time.
Thank you for voting, and yes, we hope you're able to make it to this symposium, too!

After a good push from friends and seven solid hours of sleep, I'm coming out of the funk... Even voted for "Inspiration", of all things... ~sigh~

May the best topic win... and may all contributions be from a good place!

But it's all a secret?

Gonna be an awfully short contribution from you then, Buni...

Hope you'll write, glad you'll read, and remember: This is fun. If you like the idea of the challenge, push yourself.

If you just don't have it in you, even after pushing yourself... groove on the others, and join us next time (although we'll be poorer for your lack of participation).

Yeah, I know. What can I say? My inner Jewish mother is good at dispensing the guilt...

The last symposium was tough for me, too. I dread the day when -- and it's a question of when, not if -- the topic just doesn't lend itself to my focus.

Hasn't happened yet, though -- and for that, I thank the Muse Thalia, as well as any other who may be lending her hand to these matters.

Just remember -- seriously -- that's it's supposed to be fun, and if you consider the idea of a challenge fun...

I am so, so, so tempted to not put "Food" in as a topic next time, just to see whether folks' convictions are strong enough to make a write-in candidate win... but I suspect I'd be strung up by my faloombwehbweh.

As the saying goes, "When you're Catholic, you feel guilty for being born. When you're Jewish, you feel guilty for benig alive."

Basically, guilt is going to getcha no matter what... so eat ice cream.

Voting is over, and folks have selected "Inspiration" as the topic of choice...

Glad you enjoyed reading last month's posts, and hope you'll participate this Sunday! Sobriety is definitely not required for participation.

Enjoy Las Vegas (or at least try to to be horrified by it). And welcome: Glad to have you aboard!
